The Life of Geoffrey Chaucer.....

Geoffrey Chaucer was born circa 1343, in London. When he was older (a young man) he took small jobs as a courtier, a diplomat, a civil servant, and also working for some time for the king. In 1360, during the "Hundred Years War" Chaucer was captured during the siege of Rheims. Around 1366 Chaucer got married to a woman named to Phillipa Roet. Unfortunately she died in 1387, and Chaucer then enjoyed patronage (support and/or encouragement) throughout his life.
Chaucer did not start working on Canterbury Tales until his early 40's. His first narrative poem, "The Book of Duchess" was written in September 1369. Chaucer died in London on October 25, 1400. He was buried in Westminister Abbey. A monument was built on his behalf in 1555.

"A sanguine man high-colored and benign, he loved a morning sop of cake in wine. He lived for pleasure and had always done, For he was Epicurus' very son. In whose opinion sensual delight was the one true felicity in sight. As noted as St.Julian was for bounty, he made his household free to all the county."

"They had a cook with them who stood alone, for boiling chicken with a marrow bone. Sharp flavoring powder and a spice for savor. He could distinguish London ale by flavor. But what a pity - so it seemed to be, that he should have an ulcer on his knee."
